Liquid Penetrant Testing (LPT)

Simple and effective surface crack detection using dye penetrant for non-porous materials

What is Liquid Penetrant Testing?

Liquid penetrant testing uses colored or fluorescent dye to highlight surface-breaking cracks that are made visible by applying a developer powder on non-porous materials.

How It Works

1

Surface Preparation

Thoroughly clean and dry the surface.

2

Penetrant Application

Apply penetrant liquid and allow time to seep into cracks.

3

Defect Revelation

Remove excess penetrant and spray developer powder to reveal defects.

Advantages

  • Simple, sensitive to very fine surface cracks
  • Works on virtually all solid, non-porous materials

Limitations

  • Only detects surface defects
  • Requires meticulous cleaning
  • Not suitable for porous materials

Practical Applications
